North and South Carolina remain among the 10 most “moved-to” states in the nation during 2018, ranking #8 for North Carolina and #6 for South Carolina according to United Van Lines’ 42nd Annual National Movers Study. North Carolina has remained steady in the #8 slot, while South Carolina has moved up from the #7 spot in 2017.

Charlotte, North Carolina has been a major beneficiary of this migration to North Carolina and areas of South Carolina bordering the state line. Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina and now the 2nd largest city in the Southeast (after Jacksonsville, Florida). Namely:

US News & World Report ranked Charlotte, North Carolina in as one of The 25 Best Places People are moving to in 2018 and ranked Charlotte as #22 as a Best Place To Live in 2018.

How Many Americans Move Each Year & Why

Did you know every year, some 40 million Americans (that’s about 14% of the U.S. population) move at least once? While many of those moves are by younger people relocating within cities, it’s the trends of Americans moving to warmer climates, more affordable areas, and better job opportunities that have largely determined migration patterns in recent decades.

No wonder both North and South Carolina and the Charlotte region have seen so much growth in recent years… they offer warmer climate, affordable life-style, and excellent job opportunities (Charlotte, especially, has been a magnet for significant job growth, attracting many major headquarters relocations.)

Charlotte, NC: 3rd Fastest Growing Major U.S. City

As the Charlotte Business Journal reported in 2018, the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia region saw a 13.9% increase in population from 2010 to 2017. Charlotte is one of 53 U.S. metro areas with a population of more than than 1 million. Only six other metro areas posted faster growth rates during the past seven years. And according to World Population Review, Charlotte is currently the third fastest-growing major U.S. city. If Charlotte’s population growth continues along the same vein, Charlotte’s population is set to surge by 47% from 2010 to 2030, growing from 1.87 million to about 2.74 million in just 20 years.

A study by LawnStarter projects that North Carolina and South Carolina population of the 10-county Charlotte region will grow to approximately 3 million by 2030, up almost 24% from 2014. Their analysis also showed that Mecklenburg County, where Charlotte is located, is projected to lead the 10-county with a 2014-30 growth rate of 33.9%, followed by York County, SC at 30.7%and Cabarrus County, NC, at 23.4%.
